What You Should Know Before Buying a Used Transmission

Next to your car’s engine, the transmission is the second most expensive part to replace. Some transmission issues may be repaired by an experienced mechanic or transmission shop but what if fixing it isn’t an option? If the price of a new transmission makes your wallet cringe, there is an affordable option that can save you money if you know what to look for.

Tips for Buying a Used Transmission

Before you run out and just purchase any used transmission from eBay, Craigslist or a pull and pay junkyard, here’s a little help to make sure you get the best-used tranny for your money.

Check the Transmission For Leaks

Take a good look all around the transmission for any leaks or wet areas where a leak may have been. If the fluid has already been removed, you can add more and wait a bit to see if it leaks. If the transmission does have a leak but is otherwise in good condition and can do the repair yourself, make a lower offer on it.

Check the Car Body for Damage

If the vehicle that the transmission was pulled from is available to look at, check it over for body damage or evidence that it was in a major accident. Small areas that have been repaired may not be an issue at all but if there is heavy bodywork, you may want to look elsewhere or proceed with great caution. Occasionally, vehicles that have been in serious collisions may also have damaged parts. If you look at a wrecked car with minimal damage or damage nowhere near the transmission, you’re probably in the clear but make sure the part is warrantied just in case.

Ask About a Parts Warranty

When making a large purchase and the part comes with a guarantee or warranty, you may feel more comfortable with buying pre-owned parts. Ask about the warranty specifics: How long is it for? Is it money-back, store credit or replacement only? Do you get anything in writing that protects your purchase? You’ll want to make sure you confirm the availability of a warranty before making the purchase.
